Switch to emberbee

Switch from Google Analytics

Move your site from Google Analytics to emberbee without a gap in your numbers.

Run both for a few weeks

Add emberbee next to your Google Analytics tag and leave both in place. You keep your history in Google Analytics while emberbee builds its own, and you can compare the two side by side before you switch.

If Google Tag Manager runs your tags, add emberbee there as a Custom HTML tag that fires on All Pages. See the HTML guide.

Keep your history

emberbee doesn't import past data from Google Analytics. Your numbers start on the day you add the snippet. Before you remove Google Analytics or close its property, download the reports you want to keep: open a report, choose Share this report, then Download File.

Find your reports

Most of what you looked at in Google Analytics sits on your site's dashboard:

  • Users and views are Visitors and Pageviews.
  • Landing pages are Entry pages, next to Pages and Exit pages.
  • Traffic acquisition is Referrers, UTM sources, and UTM campaigns. Links you tagged with utm_source and utm_campaign keep working, so you don't need to change them.
  • Demographics and tech are Countries, Regions, Cities, Languages, Devices, Browsers, and OS.
  • Events are custom events.
  • Key events are Goals. Add one for a page or a custom event, and see how many visitors complete it.
  • Funnel explorations are Funnels, and comparisons are Segments, the filters you save and reuse.

Move your events

emberbee counts pageviews on its own, so you can drop any page_view events you send by hand. For every other event, call emberbee with the same name and details:

// Google Analytics
gtag("event", "sign_up", { method: "Google" });

// emberbee
emberbee("sign_up", { method: "Google" });

Each detail must be text, a number, or true or false. Lists, such as the items of a purchase, are not accepted, and an event that has one is not recorded. Send the total or the item count instead. See the limits in Custom events.

Why the numbers differ

Expect the two to disagree a little. Here is why:

  • Visitors count once a day. emberbee uses no cookies, so a person who comes back on another day counts again. Over a week or a month, you'll see more visitors than Google Analytics shows users.
  • Cookie banners. If people decline your banner, Google Analytics may not count them. emberbee adds nothing to your cookie banner, so their visits still count.
  • Blockers. Ad blockers stop many analytics scripts, and some stop emberbee too. Visitors who block a script are missing from that tool only.
  • Bots. emberbee leaves out crawlers, uptime monitors, and headless browsers. Your site's settings count them under Ignored events.

Remove Google Analytics

Once you have the reports you need, delete the Google Analytics tag from your site, or pause it in Google Tag Manager. emberbee keeps counting with no change on your side.
